Behold the Arctopus returns with new album and new lineup

Sep 6, 2012

BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS return with new album and new lineup

Black Market Activities presents the long-awaited return of Behold the Arctopus, pioneers in the field of extreme, progressive music. Marking the start of a new era for the band, Behold the Arctopus’ second full-length, Horrorscension, is set for an October 23rd release.

In the five years since their last album, Skullgrid, much has transpired in the Behold the Arctopus camp. 12-string Warr guitarist Colin Marston expanded his musical outlets, founding avant-black metal band Krallice and joining progressive death metal legends Gorguts. In addition to his playing, Marston increased his output as a recording engineer, helping create albums for such artists as Kayo Dot, Orthrelm, Jarboe, and Altar of Plagues. Original drummer Charlie Zeleny departed, to be replaced by the prolific Weasel Walter, renowned for his long-running band The Flying Luttenbachers and his widespread collaborations in the free jazz, noise, and metal genres.

Horrorscension is the inaugural release of the new Behold the Arctopus lineup -- Marston, Walter, and unholy shredder Mike Lerner on guitar. (In the spirit of defining Horrorscension as the beginning of a new era for the band, the ellipsis [“...”] has been officially removed from the band name.)

In crafting Horrorscension, Behold the Arctopus employed their signature method of composing the music in written form before ever playing it. Marston elaborates: “Since our music is written down and then learned, like classical music, we're never actually building songs based on our playing ability. It’s very different from jamming out a bunch of riffs.”

Horrorscension showcases Behold the Arctopus’ jaw-dropping, complex music, delivered with a raw, visceral attack -- something closer to punk than to the antiseptic sound of music school perfectionism that is all too common amongst young technical bands. Widely regarded as a band of virtuosos, Marston, Walter, and Lerner are quick to separate themselves from the showboaters. Says Marston: “I accept that the music is not for a general audience and that musicians are more likely to relate to it due to the density, but I see a huge difference between this band and say, Yngwie Malmsteen or Dream Theater or anyone who really wants you to notice how proficient they are. I would love it if, when people hear Horrorscension, they think ‘Whoa, what the hell is going on?’ rather than ‘Wow, they can play their instruments well.’ I want the focus to be on the content, not the performance.”

Horrorscension was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Marston at his The Thousand Caves studio in Queens, NY. The cover art is once again by longtime Behold the Arctopus collaborator Terry Grow.

Check out “Disintegore”, the opening track off Horrorscension, on Behold the Arctopus’s official online merch store, along with the album pre-order:

BMA Announces New Distribution Deal with Good Fight Entertainment

May 10, 2011

Black Market Activities Announces New Deal with Good Fight Entertainment

Black Market Activities, the label helmed by The Red Chord frontman Guy Kozowyk, proudly announces a new distribution and artist development deal with Good Fight Entertainment.

Founded in 2010 by the metal/hardcore pioneers behind Ferret Music, Good Fight Entertainment consists of a record label and music management company, united under one roof. The label's roster boasts Funeral For A Friend, Madball, The Chariot, Cancer Bats and more, while the management roster features the likes of Behemoth, Between the Buried and Me, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Every Time I Die, Job For A Cowboy, Sick Of It All, Terror, and Torche.

Black Market Activities’ Guy Kozowyk, who ended his label’s distribution deal with Metal Blade Records earlier this year, says this about BMA’s new deal with Good Fight:

"The new deal keeps us distributed through Sony's RED Distribution, whom we have worked with for years now via our prior distributor, Metal Blade Records, and also opens up new doors for artist development. With Good Fight, we have the management team responsible for artists like Between the Buried and Me, Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, and Job For A Cowboy, lending a hand with developing bands on the BMA roster."

With the Good Fight deal in place, BMA reveals a stellar list of new releases lined up for early summer, including new music by Engineer, Khann, Fit For An Autopsy, Ed Gein, and BMA’s newest signing, the legendary Today Is The Day.

June 7 - Engineer - Crooked Voices

June 7 - Khann - Erode

June 21 - Fit For An Autopsy - The Process Of Human Extermination

June 21 - Ed Gein - Bad Luck

July (tba) - Today Is The Day - Pain Is A Warning

Kozowyk expands more on what fans can expect from BMA:

"This deal marks an exciting new chapter for BMA. When we were out searching for a new distro deal, working with Good Fight just felt right for everybody involved. I have known those guys through the scene for years and I have so much respect and admiration for everything they have done with every avenue of their companies. They have been extremely open and responsive to several new progressive ideas we have brought to the table, which is very important since the music industry is changing so rapidly. Among those ideas is that of functioning on a more limited model -- the idea that, in this age of digital music, there’s still a place for CDs and vinyl, it’s just on a more limited, 'collector’s item' basis. As a music fan, I'm the type of person who wants to read the layout cover to cover and have the artwork and lyrics in my music collection. With many of our upcoming releases, we will be issuing limited runs of CDs and colored vinyl with download cards for those of you, like me, who want the physical product. There will be limited shirt and music package deals in our webstore and, of course, the albums will be available digitally. Thank you for your continued support of BMA, our artists and of all extreme music. And a huge thank you to all at Metal Blade for all of their help in making our artists available for the past seven years."

Danza announced on Suicide Silence fall headlining tour

Aug 13, 2010

Here is the official press release!

SUICIDE SILENCE Announce The “Time To Bleed” North American Fall Headlining
Touring Package

Prepare to bleed as SUICIDE SILENCE announce their much anticipated North American fall headlining tour with My Children My Bride, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Molotov Solution and Conducting From The Grave rounding out this stellar “Time To Bleed” touring bill. The massive trek, which kicks off on Oct. 2nd, marks the band’s last headlining tour for the highly successful No Time To Bleed campaign, so you won’t want to miss out on this hour plus, balls out set. This is also going to feature the band’s most visual stage show yet. Be sure to either see below or head over to www.myspace.com/suicidesilence <http://www.myspace.com/suicidesilence> now to view their complete itinerary.

Mark Heylmun (guitars) states: “We haven't headlined since 2008 and it’s long overdue. We got a strong package that will get you pissed and certainly get you moving. We are also working hard on putting together the longest and most devastating setlist yet, so if you aren't there you are missing out. Come party! See you in the fall.”

SUICIDE SILENCE struck fear into the hearts of today’s impressionable youth all summer long on the Warped Tour and quickly became one of the tour’s standout artists. There is little doubt in anyone’s minds that SUICIDE SILENCE are the frontrunners of the scene as they also became one of the most extreme bands to ever debut in the Billboard Top 200 charts at such a high number, entering at #32 with over 14,000 units sold.

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza Goes "Over The Limit"

Jul 23, 2010

THE TONY DANZA TAPDANCE EXTRAVAGANZA kicks off the "Over The Limit" tour TONIGHT in Valparaiso, IN!  The month-long US tour sees Danza team up with As Blood Runs Black, Oceano, Arsonists Get All The Girls, and more.

Singled out early on by Alternative Press Magazine as “one of the underground’s fiercest live acts,” The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza cut its teeth in the mid 00’s, touring with the likes of The Red Chord, The Acacia Strain, A Life Once Lost, Cattle Decapitation, Misery Index, Despised Icon, and Beneath The Massacre. With a rep for dazzling chops and planet-smashing heaviness, balanced by a healthy sense of humor, the Tennessee band released two albums - 2005’s self-titled debut and 2007’s Danza II: Electric Boogaloo - honing a style that would help pave the way for the current explosion of forward-thinking aggressive bands.

July 6, 2010, Danza - now comprised of founder Jessie Freeland on vocals, longtime multi-instrumentalist Josh Travis on strings, and new recruit Mike Bradley on drums - returned with its long-awaited third album, Danza III: The Series of Unfortunate Events.  MetalSucks.net calls Danza III "a discordant mind melter," anchored by gargantuan crushers like "W.A.L.L.S." and "I Am Sammy Jankis."  Witness Danza live and see for yourself!

Black Market Activities welcomes the legendary Today Is The Day to its roster.

Led by “charismatic cult leader” Steve Austin, Today Is The Day is renowned as one of the most unique and influential bands of the past 15 years.  Austin’s iconic presence and fearless brand of metal, noise, psychedelia, and rock have earned the band worldwide acclaim.

Today Is The Day has toured the world with the likes of Motorhead, Melvins, Morbid Angel, Converge, Napalm Death, and Neurosis and has released eight studio albums on labels including Amphetamine Reptile, Relapse, and SuperNova.  Ex-members of Today Is The Day include Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher of Mastodon.  As a producer, Steve Austin has recorded albums by Lamb Of God, Converge, Deadguy, and many more.

The New York Times has hailed Today Is The Day with the following description: "Proud noisemakers for 15 years now, Today Is The Day starts with brutal blues-rock and completely disfigures it with sheets of distortion and the bestial ravings of Steve Austin."

Alternative Press Magazine has offered this praise: "Today Is The Day founder Steve Austin has functioned as a cultish Robert Fripp/John McLaughlin hybrid; a noise-rock auteur known as much for his off-kilter, damaging riffs and vocals as for his soaring David Gilmour leads."

Black Market Activities will release Today Is The Day’s ninth studio album in 2011.

August 21, 2010, Today Is The Day kicks off its first US tour in two years.  The tour includes dates with Unsane, Keelhaul, and A Storm Of Light, as well as an appearance at the AmRep 25th Anniversary Bash, alonsgide Melvins, Boss Hog, and Hammerhead.  The live Today Is The Day line-up consists of frontman Steve Austin, bassist Ryan Jones (Wetnurse) and drummer Curran Reynolds (Wetnurse).

Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza reveals Danza III Cover Art via Noisecreep

May 27, 2010

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza has unveiled the cover art for its forthcoming album, Danza III: The Series of Unfortunate Events, via a video clip posted today on NoiseCreep.com:

The Danza III album art was created by Michael Windsor, an award winning designer and art director at Knopf/Doubleday Publishing. Windsor has worked on book covers for numerous titles including The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown, as well as The Dexter series of books by Jeff Lindsay. He has also created album art and shirt designs for bands such as The Red Chord, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Pig Destroyer.

Danza frontman Jessie Freeland describes the Danza III art:

"The Danza III album art shows a series of complex machines that trigger the ‘series of unfortunate events’ that the album title refers to. Michael Windsor basically came up with the idea. We had complete faith in him to come up with whatever he wanted for us. The concept behind the art is an arrangement of old Victorian style machines, where each machine creates a domino effect that triggers all of the machine in the series... with an outcome that completely destroys everything!!!"

Danza III hits stores July 6 on Black Market Activities. Freeland describes the album:

"Lyrically, Danza III's themes are exactly what the title suggests: a chronicle of unfortunate events, personal, social, political, and global. Musically, we see it as an accumulation of Danza I and Danza II combined. We spent a lot of time structuring the album with three main musical elements: tech, groove, and ambience."

Singled out early on by Alternative Press Magazine as “one of the underground’s fiercest live acts,” The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza cut its teeth in the mid 00’s, touring with the likes of The Acacia Strain, A Life Once Lost, Cattle Decapitation, Misery Index, Despised Icon, and Beneath The Massacre. With a rep for dazzling chops and planet-smashing heaviness, balanced by a healthy sense of humor, the Tennessee band honed a style that would help pave the way for the current explosion of forward-thinking aggressive bands.

Danza - now comprised of founder Jessie Freeland on vocals, longtime multi-instrumentalist Josh Travis on strings, and new recruit Mike Bradley on drums - will be on tour throughout 2010 in support of Danza III.

Keep an eye out for lots of interviews, reviews and features for Lye By Mistake. Here is some recent press:

Animosity Disbands

Oct 21, 2009

We are sad to report that Animosity has broken up. The band had not toured since the end of 2008, so we had our suspicions that this might be coming. Formed in 2000, the band has released albums with us, Tribunal Records and Man Alive.

Frontman Leo Miller has provided us with the following:

“You have never seen us rest this long. For those of you wondering about Animosity, you are correct to have assumed that we disbanded. It has been nearly a year since all five of us were in a room (or the same state) together. In this time, we have written zero songs and played zero shows. In short, nothing happened which I mean to say plainly and clearly. We are all still alive and friends, but following our last tour we just did nothing band related. Many of us grew up in this band, and for me personally, Animosity was somehow prioritized over everything including my very own life. This band formed our communities, relationships, experiences and the lens through which we view the world. Eight years later, I look back to being 14 years old playing Animosity shows in garages and backyards and I can honestly say that our musical and experiential goals have been exceeded in ways that once seemed impossible to me. If you haven't gotten enough of Animosity, please rest assured that we have.”

“This is not to say, that everyone is gone from music. In the time since our last show, Navene finished his spectacular debut solo album called Fleshrot ? dementia/dyslexia. Navene wrote played and recorded all the music himself and features beastly vocals from Jonny Davy. Check out the project here and stay posted for album release info. Also, Navene has teamed up with Tosin Abasi and is drumming in their new band Animals As Leaders. Chase also has a new band called Son of Arelius from which you can expect a full-length album out soon. New music from Evan and Frank can be anticipated in various different forms. As for me, I moved out east to study the environment.”

“To Animosity fans worldwide, thank you for doing this with us, it was an awesomely epic journey. Be well!”

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza Update

Sep 24, 2009

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza announce “Danza III: The Series Of Unfortunate Events”

Murfreesboro, TN experimental metal act, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, has announced the title of their next album, Danza III: The Series Of Unfortunate Events. The band will be recording throughout November at Anthem Productions with Jeremiah Scott and Steve Blackmon.

Danza III's these is exactly what it suggests, it will chronicle unfortunate events - personal, social, political, global, etc. “We see it as an accumulation of Danza I and II combined. We spent a lot of time structuring the album with three main musical elements; those being tech, groove, and ambiance. It's a long, pissed off and sad emotional roller coaster.” Jessie Freeland and Josh Travis

Song titles so far include Passenger 57, I Am Sammy Jankis, and Yippie-Ky-Yay-Mother******. Fans will be able to check out Yippie-Ky-Yay as early as next week on the band's myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/tonydanzatapdanceextravaganza. Keep your eyes on their myspace for more updates on the record as they become available.

Danza also announces: “We are sad to inform everyone that Layne Meylain and Mike Butler are no longer a part of this project. There is no bad blood between any of us, and we are extremely proud of them for taking on their responsibilities and continuing with their life endeavors. They will be sorely missed,as they continue to push us in finishing this album and keep Danza going.” - Jessie Freeland and Josh Travis

Black Market Activities Reveals the_Network Album Details, Unveils New Track

Jul 30, 2009

Black Market Activities proudly reveals its next release: Bishop Kent Manning, the staggering second album by the_Network, out September 15 on BMA.

Produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Trap Them) at Godcity Studio and mastered by Nick Zampiello (Torche, Unsane) at New Alliance, Bishop Kent Manning is a concept album that follows the epic story of a corrupt televangelist's decline. Opening with the desperate cry, “I just got caught blood-redhanded selling absolution for a lion's share,” the album tells its tale through ten tracks that veer seamlessly from jagged aggro chaos to haunting melody and back again. Inspired by the likes of Coalesce and Botch, Bishop Kent Manning is an album of anthems -- both complex and simplistic, atonal and melodic, it's all from the gut and it's all punk rock.

To celebrate the upcoming release of Bishop Kent Manning, Black Market Activities unveils “You Fucking Fakes,” a song that embodies the spirit of the new album and gives a taste of how far the_Network has evolved. Stream “You Fucking Fakes,” here:

And read an exclusive excerpt from the short story written by the_Network guitarist Kevin Howley to accompany the album, here:

Bishop Kent Manning's full tracklisting is as follows:

1) From Holy Water To Holy Wars

2) Following And Failing

3) Your Own Personal Time Bomb

4) Service With A Smile

5) Telethons For The Rich

6) Paranoid Deserter

7) Easter Just Stopped Showing Up

8) Corpse Paint

9) You Fucking Fakes

10) Kent Manning

Look for the_Network on tour in the US throughout the fall in support of Bishop Kent Manning. Renowned as champions of the “do-it-yourself, eat-shit mentality,” the_Network has already toured Australia, England, Scotland, and Puerto Rico, all within the past year.

Founded in 2002 by The Red Chord frontman Guy Kozowyk, Black Market Activities has released music by Animosity, Behold... The Arctopus, Engineer, Lords, Psyopus, and more.
